Why Clean Registry

Cleaning the Registry

The short answer is: Yes, your computer will run better if you occasionally clean your windows systemregistry. But first, let's define exactly what the registry is...

In layman's terms, the Windows Registry is a hideously complex ball of string, rubber bands, duct tape and bailing wire that's supposed to keep track of Windows system settings, your hardware configuration, user preferences, file associations, system policies, and installed software. In slightly more technical terms, the registry is a database in which Windows keeps track of relationships between hardware, software and the operating system.

It was supposed to be an improvement on the collection of simple text-based INI files that stored Windows configuration settings, but too many pocket protectors got involved in the design and the result was an over-engineered, over-complicated mess that makes Windows much more fragile and harder for users to maintain. Since it is a single point of failure, problems with the Registry can make a Windows system slower, less reliable, unbootable, and in extreme cases can only be fixed by reinstalling the operating system.

That's why you need to use a registry cleaner every once in a while.

Your computer slows down with a bloated registry!

It's not uncommon for the registry to grow very large over time, which tends to slow down the computer's startup and can make it unstable. You can end up with lots of unnecessary registry entries that are created when you install or remove software and hardware on your computer. Sometimes an "orphaned" registry entry can confuse Windows during startup and cause a delay. In general, slimming down your registry will make Windows run faster.

The REGEDIT command will allow you to view and edit the registry, but if you don't know what you're doing under the hood, just put down that wrench and back away slowly. You can do a lot of damage to your system by flailing about with a registry editor. Specialized programs exist to examine the registry, compare what's in there to what's really on your system, and either correct or delete erroneous entries.

Why do these problems arrive?

Well, since your Windows registry is used so often, it is easy for something to happen that interrupts its function. For example, if your computer loses power and shuts off while you are saving settings for a specific piece of software, this can cause a “corrupt” file, or key, within your Windows registry. This is caused because when you save your settings, a new registry value is added into your registry to replace or amend an older setting.

If this process is interrupted, the older setting is partially changed, but the newer setting is not fully established and properly saved. Therefore, when you restart your computer, you can find any number of hard to explain problems when you do so. Other causes of registry problems can be incorrectly un-installing software or having device drivers that are corrupt.

Some slow performance also comes from buildup over time. If you have had your computer for awhile, or if you use it frequently, then invalid information can build up within your system registry. This may interfere with proper functioning, while also slowing down your system in general because your registry has too much information to sift through.

If you like, you can enter the registry manually to tie up loose ends and eliminate unnecessary information. But far simpler and more effective for most PC users is to simply run a Microsoft Registry Cleaner. A registry cleaner pores through your Windows registry and analyzes each piece of data (each registry value and key) stored there. This is typically far more effective, and far safer, than you repairing the registry yourself because the program knows exactly what to look for and exactly what to do to correctly amend the problem.

Typically, when you use a Microsoft Windows registry cleaner, the program will scan through your whole computer in one long scan. It will then report to you a list of the registry errors it has discovered. You will then be able to decide what you would like the registry cleaner to do about the problem. One option will probably be to address each error one at a time.

However, most good programs give you the option to have the cleaner fix all of the errors for you.

A clean registry is absolutely critical. The vast majority of problems that I have had with my computer were fixable through cleaning my registry.

I totally agree that cleaning the registry is an extremely important task. At least once a month I run a registry cleaner to empty out unused and malicious entries as well as a system cleaner to remove malware and internet history. This keeps your PC running fast and greatly reduces the number of times a reformat is needed. Good Article
